In small villages near Cluj-Napoca, a city located in Transylvania, the delicate art of hand-embroidery is learned in the family and passed down from mother to daughter. In the 1970s, this craft became more popular and spread from village to village. Now, a lot of women who live in north-western Transylvania create beautiful tablecloths and table runners by hand stitching painstaking details on cotton or linen fabrics. First, the fabric is cut and sewn to fit the required dimensions; then, the embroidery is made by hand using colored threads of cotton or silk. For table runners they use a different technique: the lace-like embroidery is cut with scissors and then hand sewn at the edges to secure it. It can take up to three weeks of hard work to complete a piece, depending on its length and pattern complexity.
