In the Ilyés family from Corund talent and passion for clay has been passed down from father to son for generations. They are well-known for crafting and painting fine pottery ornated with intricate designs. Each plate, vase, pitcher and mug is hand modelled by Vészti Mihály, the head of the family, with the help of his son-in-law. The two men work clay using the pottery wheel, but only after the clay has been thoroughly cleaned, kneaded and beaten; afterwards, the pieces are burnt in the oven (either electrical or traditional, with hot coals). Later, after the pottery cools down, Rózsika and her daughter Enikö hand paint each piece. Both ladies have been painting clay for over 20 years now and they don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. To obtain a white background, pottery must be dipped in a mixture of water and white clay; shades of red and yellow are made from crushed minerals. Finally, the vases are glazed and burnt once more. The resulting pottery can be used for serving drinks and food. To keep the painting and glazing intact for a long time, we recommend you to handwash Corund pottery; also, keep them away from microwaves.
